Rockford Fosgate Prime R1 subwoofers provide high performance bass at an unbelievable value. This lineup features a laser etched curvilinear dust-cap to dissipate heat generated by the high‐temp copper voice coil as well as a solid stamped steel frame with integrated frame-mounted compression terminals. Best of all, the subs are optimized for both sealed and vented enclosures.
Car Audio Fanatics who want Rockford Fosgate quality can rely on the Prime R2 series subwoofers to get the job done, and the Dual Voice Coil provides awesome installation flexibility. These drivers can pump out the bass due to their mica injected polypropylene cone, and their stamp-cast baskets with spider venting - typically reserved for more expensive models - keep the motor running cool! These R2 subwoofers are optimized for sealed and vented enclosures.
Both Rockford Fosgate Prime R1 and R2 series subs come in both a 10" and 12" diameter, allowing them to be easily compared to each other in other categories based upon their comparable diameters.
In the R1 series subwoofers, Rockford Fosgate used a single coil 4-ohm construction for both the 10" and 12" models. With the R2 line, Rockford used a dual-coil construction and offered each 10" and 12" amp with either a 2-ohm or 4-ohm construction.
With RMS power handling in the R1 series of subs, Rockford Fosgate constructed both the 10" and 12" subs with 200 watt RMS handling. For the R2 lineup, Rockford Fosgate constructed both the 10" and 12" subs with 250 watt RMS handling. In terms of power handling, you'll see that the R2 line has a slight edge over the R1 lineup.
Although the mounting depths are very close between the two lineups, there is a slightly shallower depth from the R1 lineup. However, the difference is so small that we can find better comparisons to use as a deciding factor between these separate lines of Rockford Fosgate subwoofers.
For recommendations on enclosed box size, Rockford Fosgate has listed the same sizing for both sealed and ported enclosures for the R1 and R2 lines. Once again, these dimensions can be used for planning your installation, but would not be a discernable difference to select between the two lineups of Rockford Fosgate subwoofers.
The recommended amplifier for your subwoofers will vary greatly depending on the size and quantity of subwoofers you select for your installation. The following lists are comparisons between amplifiers for subwoofers in the same dimensions between the different models. The list begins with a factory recommendation for amps that provide enough power handling for the subwoofer(s), and then move on to our professional recommendations that may vary slightly from the factory recommendations. These Classic Car Stereo recommendations may be an amp with a higher price point that will service the subs better, or an amp that provides RMS power handling over the recommended amount which will allow you to not have to maximize the output on your amp to provide full power to your subs.
Sub: (Qty 1) R1 10"
The price difference between the R1 and R2 lineups is relatively small. If you're planning a setup with either of these two lines of subs, we'd highly recommend spending the extra money for the increase in RMS power handling and construction materials used in the R2 lineup.
While the Rockford Fosgate R1 series models are 'good', the R2 series models are 'better'. The R2 models will feature better construction materials and better RMS power handling at comparable sizing for a relatively slight increase in price point. On a budget, the R1 series is hard to beat, but we'd recommend planning your installation with the R2 series if possible. Between the two, you won't regret your decision.
