The JL Audio XDM800/8 is an 800 watt, 8 channel amplifier that uses class D circuitry to deliver 75 watts per channel at 4 ohms and 100 watts per channel at 2 ohms. Also, you can bridge the XDM800/8 to deliver 200 watts per channel at 4 ohms. The JL Audio XDM800/8 is designed to withstand the elements and can be used in both car and marine applications.
The thing that makes the XDM800/8 amplifier better is JL's Advanced Rollback Protection. Simply stated, this amplifier will never overheat. Here's what happens. When the XDM800/8 starts getting warm, the amplifier will limit the peak output slightly without changing the gain. So, the amplifier "protects" itself without shutting off and without you noticing. Becuase it is only rolling back the peak output, as the listener, you don't know that the amp has gone into "protect" mode becuase it continues to play and it is only affecting peak output levels. So, you can play your music as loud as you want, for as long as you want, and you don't need to worry about the amplifier overheating. The amp gets warm, the amplifier will limit the voltage to cool itself off, then when it gets back to "normal" operating conditions, it goes back to full-power mode.
With 8 channels of input and output, the XDM800/8 is one of the most versatile amplifiers you can buy. It can be used to power up to 16 speakers and several different combinations in between. You can bridge this amp to perform as a "high power" 4-channel amplifier. It can power 6 speakers and you can bridge channels 7-8 to power a subwoofer. There are so many possible combinations. Here are some of them:
The JL Audio XDM amplifier line replaces both the XD and the M series amplifiers from JL. Before, there were two separately amplifier lines that were essentially the same, but one was built to withstand the marine environment. JL decided to make it simpler and merged them to create the XDM series. These amps have a "Car/Boat" switch that allows you to select he environment. In "Boat" mode, JL has set a low-pass filter at very high frequencies to eliminate the noise that comes from some of the electro-mechanical devices that are used on boats. If you are installing the amplifier in a car, set it to "Car" mode. If you are installing the amplifier on a boat, we recommend setting it to "Boat" mode to ensure that the auto-stabilizers and other devices on your boat don't generate noise through your stereo system.
