Best Rockford Fosgate Subwoofer

Best Rockford Fosgate Subwoofer

Rockford Fosgate is one of the original car audio brands and began making amplifiers and subwoofers in the 1970s. Rockford Fosgate has built a fanatic following thanks to their hard-hitting subwoofers that deliver the bass you want while still sounding accurate. Rockford Fosgate has a complete line of subwoofers ranging from the 10 inch R2 all the way up to a monster, 19-inch T3. We will break down the Rockford Fosgate subwoofer offering and help you determine the best Rockford Fosgate subwoofer for your car.

Best Overall Rockford Fosgate Subwoofer

The Rockford Fosgate P3 subwoofers hammer. These subwoofers handle serious power, they have serious output, and you will not find a better value for the money. Prior to the T2 and T3 ultra woofers being released, Rockford installed the P3 subwoofers in their Soundlab demo vehicles. The P3 has everything you would want from a full-size woofer and is without a doubt our "Go-to" from Rockford Fosgate. The P3 comes in 8-inch, 10-inch, 12-inch, and 15-inch diameters. These subwoofers have either 2 ohm or 4 ohm dual voice coils for maximum installation flexibility regardless of how many woofers you are installing.

Best Overall Low Profile Rockford Fosgate Subwoofer

The Rockford Fosgate T1S subwoofers are super low-profile, yet they hit like a full-size subwoofer. Many shallow subwoofers sound shallow, but the T1S is one of the exceptions. The Rockford Fosgate T1S subwoofers come in 10," and 12" diameters and are available with a single 1 ohm or single 2 ohm voice coil. These low-profile subwoofers can handle some serious power with the 10-inch handling 500 watts RMS while the 12-inch handles 600 watts RMS. These subwoofers are perfect for installing under the rear seats of crew cab trucks, behind the seats of single cab trucks, or in any other application where you want maximum output without a huge enclosure. The T1S is a full-size subwoofer in a low-profile format.

Best Premium Rockford Fosgate Subwoofer

We are taking the T2 and T3 out of the equation for this comparison because they come in non-standard sizes, and they handle insane power. If you are considering a T2 or T3, buy the biggest subwoofer you can fit and afford, give it the power it wants, and get ready for insane bass. But, if you are looking for the best, high-end, standard-sized subwoofer, the T1 delivers the output if you want serious, hard-hitting bass. These subwoofers have 2 ohm or 4 ohm voice coils, and you can select which impedance you want for fast and easy wiring. Given the size of these subs, they don't need a ton of air space, but they are pretty deep.

Best Rockford Fosgate Subwoofer for Maximum Output

The Rockford Fosgate T3 subwoofer is a massive, 19-inch woofer that can handle 3000 watts RMS and comes in single 1-ohm or 2-ohm voice coils. If money and space are not an issue, these are the baddest subwoofers on the planet. Bass is all about surface area and power. This is a 19" woofer that handles 3000 watts. What else do we need to say?

Best Value Low Profile Rockford Fosgate Subwoofers

If you have a truck, limited space, or you just want to still have room in your trunk, the Rockford Fosgate R2S is our choice for an affordable, low-profile subwoofer. As we stated above, many shallow subwoofers sound shallow. The R2S delivers decent output without taking up much space, and we like it more than the more expensive P3S. The P3S sounds shallow, in our opinion, and is not worth the money. With Rockford Fosgate low-profile subwoofers, go with the affordable R2S or step up and break out your wallet for the T1S. The T1S and the R2S aren't in the same league, but their price points also reflect that. If you want Rockford Fosgate, you want a low-profile subwoofer, but you don't want to spend $500+ per sub, the best choice is the R2S.

Best Entry Level Rockford Fosgate Subwoofer

If you are just getting into car audio subwoofers or if you just want some bass, but you don't need to go crazy, we like the Rockford Fosgate R2. The R2 subwoofers come in 10-inch and 12-inch sizes and are offered with dual 2 ohm or dual 4 ohm voice coils. We like the R2 over the more expensive P1 due to the cone material. The R2 has a polypropylene cone, while the P1 has a reinforced paper cone. The extra rigidity of the polypropylene cone outperforms the P1. They both have the same RMS power ratings; the R2 costs less and sounds better. Give these subwoofers the power they want, and you will love the output for the money.

Important Factors
Power Handling

The power handling of the subwoofer is one of the most important factors when determining the best Rockford Fosgate subwoofer. If your amplifier puts out 300 watts RMS, an P3 or T1S is probably not a good fit. However, if you have a 1000 watt amplifier, you want something that is going to handle some power to ensure that you don't cook your subwoofer, and a R2 or even a P3 might not be enough. Keep in mind, though, that the power of your amplifier is distributed among all of the subwoofers connected to it. For example, if you have a 1000 watt RMS amplifier and you have two subwoofers connected to it, that is 500 watts per subwoofer. If you have four subwoofers connected to it, that is 250 watts per subwoofer.

Mounting Depth

The larger, more expensive subwoofers that handle more power have a larger magnet, a deeper basket, and require more mounting depth. If you are limited on space, the best Rockford Fosgate subwoofer is probably a product from their thin-woofer lines such as a the R2S or T1S. At the same time, if you have a full-size vehicle and a massive trunk, you probably don't need to worry about mounting depth as you will have space for a large box.

However, just because you have the space for a large subwoofer box doesn't mean you necessarily want to devote ALL of your trunk space to your subwoofers. You may want to have both bass and storage space, and there are several solutions from Rockford that will give you just that.

Bass Needs

Every car needs more bass, and while many might argue that there is no such thing as "Too much bass," there might be, depending on the music you listen to and your personal preferences. If you listen to classic rock, which typically doesn't have a ton of bass, or if you prefer accuracy, a hard-hitting T1 might be way too much. You can save your money, get a smaller, less expensive subwoofer and still enjoy your music.

Budget

It is important to take your budget into consideration when determining the best Rockford Fosgate subwoofer. If you can't afford a higher-end model, and you can't afford the amplifier to power it properly, you will be much better off with a R2 vs. a P3 or P2. If you spend all of your budget on a P3, and you don't have enough left over to buy an amplifier to give it enough power, you have wasted your money.

The Other Models

The Rockford Fosgate P1 is the low end of their Punch subwoofer line. The P1 handles the same amount of power as the R2, it costs more, and it uses a reinforced paper cone instead of the polypropylene cone that comes in the R2. The R2 costs less and sounds better.

The P2 subwoofers from Rockford Fosgate find themselves in "No Mans Land" in our opinion. The power handling isn't significantly more than the R2, yet the P2's aren't in the same ballpark as P3s. The P2 is a step-up price point subwoofer, but you don't gain much for what you pay for. If you want to step up from an R2, go with P3, give the P3 the power it wants, and get ready to smile.

The Rockford Fosgate T2 subwoofers are insane. But, these subwoofers are for those that can't fit or don't have a budget for a T3. These are big, hard-hitting subwoofers that use the same technologies used in the T3. They are just smaller and handle less power.

The P3S shallow subwoofers from Rockford Fosgate sound shallow. They are overpriced for what they do. If you want a low-profile subwoofer and you want Rockford Fosgate, go with the R2S and save your money or pay up for the T1S and get some serious output. The P3S is very, "Blah," in our opinion.
