How Do I Identify Which JL Audio Subwoofer is Installed?


The best way to identify the model of JL Audio subwoofer is the remove it from the enclosure.  The model number should be located on the back of the magnet of the subwoofer.  If there is no model number present on the subwoofer, the second best solution is to look for a serial number and contact JL Audio for the model number.  Giving generalized descriptive directions to help identify a subwoofer can be tricky due to the variety of different subwoofer models.  For instance, the W0, W1, and W3 subwoofers are all in their third iteration of production.  Therefore, each of these models have three different versions that increase the odds of misidentifying the correct subwoofer model based on looks alone.  This information presented here pertains to the current product offering only.  The only way to be 100% certain is the remove the subwoofer from its enclosure and check the back of the magnet, or to retrive a serial number and contact JL Audio.  If you'd still like to proceed without removing the subwoofer, here are some methods you can use to try and identify your subwoofer model:

What to look for:
  • Black Cone
  • JL "Boots" Logo in the Center

W0v2 (*Older Version)

JL Audio W1 Subwoofers

JL Audio W1 Model Version 3

What to look for:
  • Gray Cone
  • JL "Boots" Logo in the Center
  • The Cone has a "Dinner-plate" like appearance
  • 8 Screw holes that are equal distances apart
  • Double check against the JL Audio TW5 model because they are both gray, they both have the boots logo, and they both look like dinner plates.

  • It has a silver ring at the endge of the woofer cone, right inside the surround.
  • Surround protrudes out further than the basket mounts

What to look for:
  • Black Cone
  • Small, "W7" badge at the bottom of the subwoofer
  • No silver wring at the edge where the cone and the surround meet

W7 (*Older Model)

JL Audio TW5 Subwoofers

JL Audio Thin-Line W5 Model

What to look for:
  • Gray Cone
  • Looks similar to the W1 with the "Dinner Plate" appearance
  • Small JL Audio logo in the center
  • The mounting of the TW5 uses mounting ears instead of the traditional, 8 mounting holes. Instead there are 4 "Ears" and each ear has two screw holes in it.

  • Black Cone
  • Big JL Audio "Boots" logo in the center
  • Aluminum dust cap with a silver ring
  • 4 mounting ears, each with 2 screw holes each



JL Audio TW1 Subwoofers

JL Audio Thin-Line W1 Model

What to look for:
  • Black Cone
  • Small JL Audio "Boots" logo in the center
  • The cone itself is mostly flat
  • The mounting ring looks like it was round and someone cut if off to make it more square in order to make it fit.
